On Saturday, April 25, 2026, an awards ceremony honoring the Grand Marshals of the April 26 parade was held at Cipriani 42 in Manhattan, as part of the official dinner hosted by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York.

Capital Link was among the honorees, represented by Nicolas Bornozis (President) and Olga Bornozi (Managing Director), alongside John Catsimatidis (Red Apple Group), Dr. Nikolas P. Tsakos (TEN Ltd), and The Hellenic Initiative. Metropolitan Ieronymos and Alkiviadis Stefanis were designated Honorary Grand Marshals.

The dinner featured keynote remarks by the President of the Greek Parliament, Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis, and was attended by approximately 500 distinguished members of the Greek diaspora. The program included the participation of the Presidential Guard's Evzones and a dance group from Western Greece. Remarks were also delivered by Archbishop Elpidophoros and representatives of Greece and Cyprus.

Acknowledgment was given to Yiannis Stroumbakis for his contribution to the organization of the event. The organizing committee included Lou Katsos, Yiannis Stroumbakis, Giorgos Paralemos, Giorgos Venizelos, and Giorgos Meintassis.

We were deeply honored to serve as Grand Marshals of yesterday's Greek Independence Day Parade — a celebration marking a remarkable dual milestone: 205 years since the Greek War of Independence and 250 years since the American Revolution.

Organized by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, this parade stands as the largest celebration of Greek independence outside of Greece, uniting thousands of Hellenes from across the United States and the global diaspora.

Marching alongside Greek Orthodox parishes, Hellenic cultural organizations, student groups, regional federations, and national institutions such as @orderofahepa, we were joined by dignitaries and the Evzones of the Presidential Guard of Greece.

From the iconic fustanella uniforms to the rhythm of marching bands and the sea of blue-and-white flags along Fifth Avenue, the day was more than a parade — it was a living connection between two revolutions and the enduring ideals they share.

Doxology section title

The weekend's commemorations opened with a Doxology at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center, setting a meaningful tone and highlighting the lasting role of faith within our community.

From there, we moved to Bowling Green for the annual raising of the Greek flag. As the site where New York City was first established in 1653, it offers a powerful sense of history and continuity that gives the ceremony added significance.

Marking 205 years since Greek independence, and with 250 years of American independence on the horizon, the moment invites reflection on a shared commitment to freedom — one achieved through sacrifice and never to be taken for granted.

This year's parade preparations commenced on April 23 at the Stathakeio Cultural Center in Astoria, following the final Pan-Hellenic meeting held in anticipation of the 205th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.

During the meeting, a detachment of the Presidential Guard's Evzones was formally presented, having arrived from Athens to participate in the parade on Fifth Avenue. The program also included a reference to the Exodus of Messolonghi.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Church, political leadership, and the Greek-American community. Discussions focused on coordination, historical context, and community engagement. The President of the Parade Committee, Ilias Katsos, highlighted the connection between the Greek and American Revolutions.

International Greek Language Day is celebrated annually every February 9, the day which also honors the memory of the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote Greece’s national anthem ”Hymn to Liberty.”

This celebration seeks to highlight the Greek language’s fundamental role and defining contribution in the development and establishment of European and world literacy and culture.

Greek remains a language which greatly enriches international scientific discourse. More than any other tongue, it is the language which developed, shaped and expressed most of the scientific theories, philosophical thoughts, and literature in most of the modern-day languages of the Western world.

PAPARSENOS
